Does anyone know if it would be possible to get quakelive working on the N900?

I don't think this will be possible unless they officially support ARM CPU based systems, which isn't impossible but they would have to do it.

Maybe one day if Maemo/Android/Snapdragon Netbooks start becoming really popular. In the mean time we still have ioQuake 3 in the repositories to play with.

Maybe OpenArena will entertain you in the meantime?
It's in the Extras, Extras-Testing or Extras-Devel.

Are openArena and Quake3 not the same thing?

Cause I can't seem to play Quake3 online :-(

Does OpenArena work online?

OpenArena is pretty much the same thing as Quake3 (99%)
Only the name is different as far as I can tell
Also, I'm almost sure that you can play openarena online, a friend of mine has it on his N900 and said he could so..
(I'm getting my N900 this week )
