Hi guys. I have my n900 and it doesnt support the 3G connection of AT&T so I decided to change to T-mo. I did call customer service of AT&T yesterday and tell them that i want to deactivate my acc. They told me that they're going to do it on march 7 because that's the last cycle of my bill. I need to change carrier asap and my question is, Can I open new acc on other carrier and use the same number before they end up my acc or while my acc is still activated:? Thanks in advance...

DISCLOSURE: make sure you are out of contract with att lest you dont mind ETFs.

from what i can remember regarding number portability (havent lived in the US for 5 years) you should call tmo up and tell them that you'd like to sign up for a new plan and port your number over and that should be the end of it. they will arrange everything with att and you will get a prorated bill from att after that. (dont know how long the whole process takes)

canceling with att first runs the risk of losing your number afaik.

alternatively if you are in a hurry, you could get a new number with tmo now and look into porting your old number to replace your new one with a looser time line.

yah i know that there is termination fees, 2nd i know that you need to tell them for porting the number. my question is if i can open the acc now even my acc on at&t is still open. you said that its better to wait for the cancellation 1st. so my other question is, if i open now and get a new number.. can i changed that number after the at&t closes my acc?.

once at&t closes your account you will not be able to keep your number.
you can get a new number from tmobile now but let them know before hand that you will need to do a port in o the 6th. and on the 6th give tmobile a call and give your at&t acct. information that is all. if they are going to close your acct. on the 7th then you have until 6th to keep your number.

I switched from ATT to T-Mobile, I just walked in to a T-Mobile store asked to open an account and transfer my number, the said no problem all I needed was my account number. Phoned ATT while I was at the store for the account number. The TMo store sorted everything else including porting the number and cancelling the ATT account. walked out of the store with internet access activated in store, the number transfered about 4 hours later.

I think as long as the account is still open you should be able to port it. I would go to the ASAP the porting of the number is automated it seems, I would imagine if the number is active it will port no problem.

Ok. I did order now online. I don't know what's going to happen. I checked if my current number is eligible for transfer and it says "yes". it says on t-mo website that they are going to contact my current carrier and they will handle all of it.. i chose the overnight shipping and i might get the new sim tomorrow..

I just did this for a cousin of mine. Tmobile said not to say nothing to Att becuase they will make it difficult to leave. You need your account number, not the phone number and the password to your account-if you have one. You own the number. Call tmobile and tell them your situation. You do not need wait till the end of the month. They are messing with you. They can prorate your bill on either company and it is standard protocol.
