GPS not beeing assisted can be very slow in getting a fix. It will work but you have to be patient. If the satellites are in view it can take up to 12 minutes to get fix.

Yikes! 12 minutes? That's horrible. Are there anyway to decrease the lock time? I want to use it as a GPS in my car.

The minimum time to first fix from a cold start is, under ideal circumstances, about 12 and a half minutes, however if you get any errors you can safely extend that out as long as it takes to build up an accurate almanac and so on.

It's a limitation of the GPS system (data rate) so you can't avoid it beyond using assisted GPS, meaning you download that information from the internet in a few fractions of a second instead of getting it from satellite(s).

There is no way to speed up the process using unassisted GPS.

From a warm start your GPS might have a fix in 30 seconds or less.

Once time is correctly set, lock time should decrease IIRC. However, with internet access it should lock just fine, SIM or not?

Oh, and, that is for out in the open for a sunny day. If cloudy, if between tall concrete, etc, doesn't work. GPS limitation.

I could never get the built-in GPS to work the brief time i had the N900. I had to resort to a bluetooth GPS receiver i had around that picks up in less than 10 secs. Shame.

Can't tell what was wrong or what version you had. Mine locks in about 2 seconds warm, about 5 cold but online with a good link. I'm happy with it and, as long as it's network assisted, beats all my other dedicated GPS devices hands down, including in sensitivity.

Too bad it can never replace my PNAs, primarily because the software is way under what the PNA runs and secondarily because it's poorly adapted for a car (heat resistance, glare-prone screen, low speaker volume, lack of good solid grip, unoptimized UI, battery life).

edit: i changed the server
