What exactly happens when you hold down the power button to boot when it is plugged in?

Does the display or notifaction light change at all?

Yeah it gets white as if it was booting normally then it just shut down and the notification light starts flashing yellow again. If I try to start it again right away it gets as far as the Maemo loading dots then it goes black again with charging notification light starting to flash again. It has to be unplugged to start. I don't know what's wrong with that thing....

Are you saying that the phone does not boot when connected to the USB, but boots fine when not connected to the USB??

What is the host computer?
I may have ran into this before. My thinking, at the time, was that the phone was booting to the minimal USB mode (as usual) then staying there. Maybe due to some behavior on the host computer side. Holding down the power button only exits this minimal USB mode. Whereupon the phone restarts, only to start back up into this minimal USB mode.

Not to sure about this... You use the stock nokia charger?

Have You tried to remove the battery for a short while (a few minutes) and put it back in?

Without a charger/USB cable attached.

Yes I use the stock Nokia charger. And it also does this whatever computer it is connected to. Basically if it's charging it is simply not going to start up.

Example: Usually after reflashing I unplug the phone but yesterday, when I reflashed it, I left it plugged and it didn't reboot even though -R was present in the command because it was charging... I'm puzzled by that behavior.
