Reflash rootfs and emmc. More explanations in wiki.maemo.org, search reflashing. You start over with your device as clean as when you first unboxed it.

Well reflashing is not essential to the task ahead, but reading is!!!

There is also a more convinient way to do it from a Linux-PC or a Linux-Live-CD, which is far less "geeky", but requires multiboot and the multiboot settings for your kernel to be installed.
Any which way you are heading, have everything in /home/user/ backed up, everything, even the dot.files and dot.folders!
Also using the Backup-Application of the phone prevents headache in the moment something goes wrong.
