In the Nokia 5800 browser I found a simple approach for zooming in websites, e.g. when the links are too close to each other and one clicks on the wrong one.
This is double clicking on the content (no link under it) which zooms the page twice and then the links are much clearer to click on.
Can this be built in an extension of MicroB ?

Maemo has a simple approach too - zoom buttons. No need for app specific zooming.

I don't think that's what the OP meant. When you zoom in microb, it reflows the page. Four problems with this (in microb):

a) slow
b) zoom is always in fixed steps and order. Can't say I just want to go 200 and then back. You have to go 100-120-150-180-240 (and suffer the 4 reflows on your way in and out of zoom).
c) minimum zoom 80% (but seriously?)
d) can break layout

I'd dare say I would almost prefer a *superdumb* pixel multiplier zoom I can preset in addition to a 'normal' zoom level. Then I wouldn't care if it was by buttons or tapping.

or on 5800, it zooms exactly where you want it to zoom.

The funny thing with microb is that on zooming OUT it almost manages to keep position. Zoom in OTOH keeps to the left, which is less than great.

Compiz had a feature where you could draw a square with the mouse and zoom to that exact area.

If maemo had something like that (even if it took 500% longer), it would be awesome. Maybe hold one of the zoom buttons without releasing it and draw the square, or sth similar.

But that is impossible, isn't it?

Not impossible on Maemo 5, I assume.

How about the method Samsung use on their s60v5 devices? tap+hold move up/down for zooming in/out.

its not impossible, but it becomes impractical quickly if there is lag.

nice idea though, this vid shows how I like zooming to occur:

I don't know what "superdumb" is, but I would also prefer a simple pixel zoom. Tie it directly to the frame buffer and it could be fast. a) will always be an issue with app specific zooming and b-d) are specific implementation flaws that can be fixed
