Hi there...

I just wondered if there exists some small applet which checks, say, all 15s whether it can find an open wlan and "do something" (play a beep,...) in that case. It would be nice if you are new to a city and don't know where you will find a cafe with free wireless which might be across the street but you simply don't see it... And I don't want to run kismet for this all the time.

Regards,
Tantris

I spent Christmas eve in the Houston Galleria shopping mall and found so many WAPS (most secured but a few that weren't) that you didn't have enough time to completely scroll through the list before it was updating again.

The look-for-new-connections should be MANUAL (one-shot) so that you can look through the list.

A nice feature would be to only show infrastructure points (ignoring ad hoc networks).

It would also be nice if you could save the list to a text file for later review.

This might be true for the US... In some minor cities in Germany you have far less numbers of free hotspots (*if* you have any). And it would be cool if you could just enable the applet, plugin your headphones and if you hear a beep you know that there "is something"

I agree with rdc that there should be a check-box in the seach-for-networks box to ignore ad-hoc networks.
The patchless Windows XP bug is VERY common around here. In a place with computers (train, office, airport, etc.) I typically see about 2-3 times as many broken XPs as I do actual access points.

Is there any hope for this? I have Kismet working but that's kind of extreme just to find an AP. Something like netstumbler or (dare I hope?) Wellenreiter would be fantastic.
