Tweakr has an option to enable snapping to grid for hildon-desktop.
I feel like I'm working for an advertising firm...

Actually hildon-home IS snapping to grid, but default is 2 or 4 pixels and you just can't notice it ;-) There is a setting somewhere for that, I'll look it up when I get to a PC (writing this on N900 obv).
So... I'm pretty neurotic about aligning stuff perfectly and the desktop icons/widgets are driving me insane, since they are just freely draggable.
Is someone working on some app that would help you with aligning stuff on the desktops? I was thinking it would be cool if someone made a simple app that displays a "grid" on the screen that would ease the aligning process.
I'm kind of surprised that the default "aligning interface" doesn't even have edge snapping, which would also make it easier to align things...
Like this (hehe):
