I'm getting a new Nokia 770 for my birthday in a couple days (it's a couple months old, but in great condition). I was wondering if it is worth it to upgrade to OS2007 HE. I want a stable operating system on it, but I want recent software and such. Anything I should be worrying about? What do you all suggest I add to mine when I get it?
Any way to get FLAC/OGG support?

Short answer: YES, 2007HE is much better than 2006. Even better will be 2008HE when it comes out, though the low clock speed of the 770 will be outmatched even more so now that the N8x0 are clocked at 400mhz.

Long answer: Yes, search the forums. AFAIK Skype, Rhapsody, and some other programs still won't work. Microb and flash 9 support are also problematic. I imagine youtube will never run smoothly on 250mhz.

Very long answer: Sell the 770 if you can and buy an N800. It is worth it.

congrats corevette, and welcome to the community.

The nokia 770 still is awesome, and in some ways it's the best of them all. (durability, dpad usability).

If you want to play with different OSes - i dunno - give em a shot. Doing the multiple-boot thing so you can boot to different versions helps you make backups, try stuff out - saves time in the long run.

cheers

will the OS2008 HE come out soon? If not, does the OS2007 HE still receive updates every so often?

I was just using mine actually. (2 yrs later!) This will definitely be one of your favourites. It's so versatile.

Anyway, I was debating flashing to 2007HE last night but saw a bunch of commentary on neutered media support, instability, etc. What's the deal with that?

Try both, see what you like best. Easy enough to reflash to a different OS if you don't like one or the other.

I love my 770. I find more uses for it every week. OS06 works fine for me. I still may try and see how OS07 works, though. I want to load it to the card but, I still have the 64mb card. I don't think the os will fit. Haven't searched either.

Ater trying to replace my window manager and screwing up (my fault), I may as well reflash to HE2007.

I'm also suggesting that you try the both OSs yourself. See which one works better for you.

I have both OSs installed, OS2007HE on the internal memory and OS2006 on a 512MB partition of a 2GB MMC card. This way I can install and test new Hacker Editions and keep my OS2006 install intact. However, OS2006 is my primary choice, as HE seems to be less stable on my device.

But I must say that if you are after "recent software", 770 may not be the best device for you.

i also own an 770 and i´m usin OS2007HE without problems. only thing is, that i was unable to install doom so far.
IMHO OS2007 is way faster than OS2006 was. i habe no problems with the stability, it runs just smooth, stable and great.

i think, the others have already mentiones the point: just try it, flashing the device is very easy.
