EDIT: so get your arses to MeeGo Conf b/c thats probably reason why they needed FCC clearance to give them out there to participants in US.
That kinda makes this commercial a huge waste of money though...

It most probably was never meant to be released.
The Firm that said last week they was making a commercial for N950 meant the 2nd device.

Compared to the R&D spent to Qt, Harmattan and MeeGo that ads price isn't even a drop in the water.
The first MeeGo device was originally supposed to come out Q4 2010 and the ad got 2010 in it and comment about super bowl coming to NYC in the social app(that was news in May 2010).

Could mean nothing, but there has been quite a bit of rumors that RM-680 would be dev only. Qwertyless device for consumers.

I don't get this, what would be the point of a dev device which has 12MP camera and so on? I think that's bullcrap.

Is there any way I can disguise myself as a developer? I am nothing but a mere tester at best.

Not because the missing lens cover. No! It's despite the missing lens cover.

In my opinion they haven't understood the main problem. If they only copy a design they can't generate that much money as the competitor does. If the customers are able to buy the original, why they should buy the counterfeit?
Sell something unique and you could get a appropriate market share if it is good enough.

The same with the not (or only hardly) removeable batteries (Nokia N8) or the not easily mountable flash storage at Windows Phone 7. (they have seen at Apple that it only works with iTunes, so they thought all customers want it this way and now you need a ZUNE compatible device, a Linux or Mac won't work)

The companies should stop trying to copy the iPhone and start to think themselfes how they could generate their own type of customers as MeeGo does. Hopefully with a Phone that fits in the MeeGo concept and not a iPhone copy&paste with MeeGo running on it.
many OEMs killed lens covers to help the experience and use of AR apps. Helps to not have an "open lens cover" alert. I think its no big deal myself on a high end optics device, though.

B/c this device was ready to go to market but got pulled b/c they got bad feedback on the UI so deciced to rework it.
While they redone the UI this device was made way too late to release, so the few that came off production are now being given out as dev devices I guess
