I dont have an access point at hand and want to be able to browse the internet with my n800 using a ad-hoc setup, anyone can point me to the right working howto or is it not possible ?

It's definitely possible, but you don't say what host OS you're planning on connecting to.

I connect mine to an OSX laptop occasionally, very easy to set up there.
Search google for "internet connection sharing" or something similar for your OS.

It seems you missed the OP's "ubuntu" in the title..

I could definitely tell you for windows but linux is not my expertise (soon though..)

Does this ring any bells?
"Using the network manager you can setup an ad-hoc network. Simply install network-manager and network-manager-gnome (or network-manager-kde) and then restart. You should get a new network manager icon on the panel. You can click it and choose "create new wireless network". Set the channel and other details and it will setup an ad-hoc connection."
