No, I suppose we're not at the end of TMO and you might be right that it won't go away, but I can't help feeling a growing sense that Nokia will be sick of funding talk.MAEMO.org and Reggie/et all might just feel like it's no longer fun, too, and then TMO suddenly goes away. Before I, or anyone else, goes on about how cynical I am, let me point out how often I've been right about my predictions of things I've said here on ITT/TMO. I hope I'm wrong, but I get the sense that it's probably going to disappear soonishly. o.o It's just a feeling, nothing more. Might be nothing, in the end.

I'm not sure if talk.maemo.org is going away just yet after learning that the N9 will be running harmatten, which is maemo chocked full of meego libraries, but the quality of posts here has slid tremendously (IMO) and I don't have the energy or time to support another underdog OS with an uncertain future and a single device on the market. Maemo was more than enough for me.

I love linux to bits, and with mobile SoCs approaching the power of computers, I forsee much competition in this space, from players like Canonical and others with proven staying power and that can execute. Focusing on MeeGo seems like a focus on potential over product and re-creating what exists rather than forging new ground.

That said, things can change. If meego is truly impressive, I will certainly give it another look. However, I can't actually see that happening to the extent that I would move over to that ecosystem.

I suppose that my interest in the forum will wane as I move farther from meego, and the forum turns over new users.

The new keyboard allows for resizing, repositioning, and predictive text. It should make it much more comfortable to use in a variety of situations.

It would have been nice to include a 'split' mode, that separated the keyboard in half for comfortable access to both thumbs. I can't remember which android keyboard currently does this.

I own a Huawei S7, the precursor to the Huawei Slim and Mediapad.

Build is solid. Battery life is pretty poor (small battery), on the heavy side for such a small battery. From what I understand, the Slim is a bit smaller, a bit better on battery, a bit lighter, etc. Same hardware as the S7.

The mediapad should be an upgrade hardware wise.

However, Huawei support is essentially non-existent, the S7 was debuted with a dock that has failed to materialize. The S7 accelerometer axis were slightly off (swapped) on 2.1, with 2.2 two axis are fully swapped. As a result, some games will play ok, some won't. I don't believe a fix is forthcoming, so it's potentially screwed up in the mediapad as well.

But, there is a small, semi-active group on androidtablets.net doing some rom tweaking, etc.

Still, at 7", it's in the range I'm looking for, and I wouldn't rule them out, as the pricing has been very competitive.

Wow! Great info!

Battery life is a big deal for me, so I would expect a running time of at least 6-8 hours before it runs dry with normal tasks, and a very long sleep time.

Of course, quality is another. At this point of my life, I'd gladly pay another $100 if I were getting a device that I would enjoy, rather than saving $100 and getting a device that I'm constantly having to work around to use.

There aren't too many devices in the 7" range, but Asus is planning a device, and I really like their start with the Transformer, so I would give the node to theMeMo over this, despite that the Huawei device has far stronger internals (presuming it has the MSM8660).

As always, reviews will spell victory or defeat, and I would recommend that everyone do some reading rather than getting sold by a spec sheet.

Currently, my S7 would get between 2-4 hours constant use. I believe the battery is around 2200mah, so I think when compared to a Galaxy Tab, that's kind of sensible (6-8 hrs, 4000mah?).

Given the extra weight, ~1.25 lbs, battery life is not so good. However, it has AT&T 3g freqs, and only cost $250 on sale. The Slim goes for around $299, so I'd expect the mediapad to be a bit more.

I agree with you Capt'n, if we're only talking around $100 more for a quality device, I'd pay it. I only got the S7 because I wasn't sure if I'd use a tablet much, and for $250, it had decent hardware, a local return policy (best buy), and I thought a better bet than some of the $150 tablets out there.

If we're talking $399 for the mediapad versus the Transformer, it'd be a tossup, but I'm leaning towards the transformer (depending on specs) as a better known quantity with probably better support.

2-4 hours would be deal breaker, but as you mentioned, it really is quite exceptional given the 2200mAh battery (assuming standard tablet voltages). Since the battery is typically one (if not the) single most expensive component in this class of device, explains how they got the price so low. It also shows that huawei is willing to cut essential parts out a device to compete on price, which is not particularly inspiring.

I *do* like that they aren't over-charging for 3G radios, that can be bought one-off on ebay for around $30. It surprises me to this day, that this feature increases the devices final price by $100, especially since OEMs will be buying bulk and at wholesale prices.*
* EDIT: iSuppli estimates that the 3G radio in the iPad costs $24.50.

But I can't bring myself to spend $500+ on a device that will be obsoleted in a few months. I am interested in replacing my laptop, so when SoCs reach a critical speed, I will have a compelling reason to upgrade. Oh, and I don't have a smartphone so 3G is a must-have feature.

I agree, Asus is probably the best value currently. They release a ton of different product targeted toward any type of user, and have great quality to boot.

WHOO! I got some hands-on, baby!


I wish it were mine (the Moto Droid and the Dell mini are mine... just proving I really had it in my paws). My coworker in the other cubicle (the one that started buying up Androids after seeing my hack around at mine and enjoying it) ended up buying his. He got the 32GB version along with the keyboard. I hate him too, now. heheh

In my grubby paws!


Using it in person made me want it even more. It felt very fluid and I love the fact that it DID support the HID profile USB devices I plugged into it (i.e. USB mouse).. but even the trackpad felt fluid and comfortable to use (you can even simulate mouse scrolling using a two-finger scroll down the trackpad).

Overall, I felt it was a SOLID netbook/tablet device! PERFECTLY solid and MUCH lighter than I'd expected. I still feel like I would want my Galaxy Tab for the portability, even if I had one, though, but it would make a GREAT power efficient netbook replacement.
