VOIP and IM are "not supported" in the contract - but Vodafone will happily sell you a phone with both those capabilities and the data plan to take advantage of them. i.e. "they hurt our txt & voice cash cow and we can't yet think of a way to charge extra for them"

Technically, it doesn't allow tethering, but my plan didn't actually have any data options that did allow tethering... and I'm not using it all the time so I don't really care. The plan is for "unlimited" use, and I don't know if it has any hidden monthly caps.

Canada sucks for GSM band wireless internet options and pricing. I'll likely be switching away from Rogers when a competitor comes along but right now we don't have many options. Currently rogers is the only player. (they own Fido) and Bell uses CDMA.

Wireless cell phone data rates are outrageous. Now that wimax is available I'm looking forward to getting that service but I hope I can connect with my tablet without needing rogers/bell's wimax modems. It would make the service more useful.

O2 are one of the worst data providers in the UK. I'll be switching to T-Mobile or 3 at the earliest oppurtunity (ie. when my contract is up for renewal and the N95 8GB or N82 is available so probably January). Currently I think 3 have the best UK data plans, offering 1GB/month for £5 3G/HSDPA.

Surprised to see so many responses I've settled on Sony Ericsson K850i after confirming with tnkgirl that it gets good transfer speed using bt dun in the SF Bay Area. The initial impetus behind the question is the current situation where using a cellphone for 3g connectivity for an internet tablet often requires buying hardware which duplicates functionality i.e. the n95 + the n810 gets you two wifi connections...
