We have pidgin if you are looking for an alternate IM client.

This is written in Python, so could (theoretically) be done quite quickly. At any rate, no crazy build environment is necessary. I have recently become a fan of Emesene, so may tinker with this
Right now, the login screen works right out of the box, but it sadly dies when I try to log in...

yea true pidgin is available and working fine. there are two things here for n900, one msn protocol to add and use with conversations and second a linux client for live messenger i.e. kopete, emesene, kmess, pidgin. emesene and kmess are purely live messenger alternatives and you are right, emesene is probably the best. personally amsn looks and feels like from 1980s, hate it.

all in all, porting emesene to n900 would be the ultimate. first off, has anybody tried to install it in n900? second what are the tools needed to take up this challenge. i would give it a try.

try to compile it with 'python setup.py build_ext -i (python-dev package required)

logged in, could not establish a conversation window to start conversation. application hanged

there is no python-dev package which package shall i download
how can i include libmimic

Unfortunately I don't recommend using pidgin extensively at this time. When using it my battery might run out in less than a day. When not using it the phone sips power.

Hoi,

I could run emesene 1.0.1 with python 2.5. But this version has only the Windows Live Messenger Protocol and this isn't supported anymore. If you try to login it comes the error "This protocol is not supported.". I think it's too old.

The newest emesene-version won't start, because it want python 2.6.
