Yeah I haven't encountered many problems other than failure to restart and having to kill the process in order to unfreeze the mail client ie it hasn't corrupted my gmail account or anything terrible, but I would recommend those installing to be careful as this is probably pre alpha state kind of like the first microb and rtcomm.
I just finished a build following the instructions on tinymail.org, but my N800 isn't here with me, so I won't be able to give it a try before this evening
I think the build should be fine. Modest didn't work in emulator as described on that page, but tinymail demoui did. If you have OS2008 installed and want to give it a try you can fetch the tarball here. Setup on the tablet is described on the bottom of the page linked above - basically you have to unpack and copy the message file to /usr/share/locale. Please report back, I'm curious!
DISCLAIMER: I give absolutely NO GUARANTEE about this software. Infact I haven't even tested it. Don't come crying to me if it deletes all your mail or blows up your hardware.
So far, I'm quite impressed with Modest. For one thing, it's snappy. In many ways, it's faster for reading my imap account than thunderbird on my laptop. It's also not getting bogged down by the almost 100k messages like every other imap client wants to. It has some features I'd still like to see, but I'll build the latest code and see where it stands before mentioning things I think it's lacking.
Good stuff. This is what the built in client should have been....
