Hi Guys,

I am looking at buying a tablet PC (haven't decided which one yet). I live in the UK but have noticed that prices if bought from another country (even taking delivery into account) are a lot cheaper.

Does anybody know if there are any additional taxes etc.. I would have to pay if say I ordered something from the USA? Also, what other, if any, problems may I experience buying in this fashion?

Thanks for any advice you can give

Ben

The last time I help my friend to buy an iPad 3g from usa and send it overseas. I just need to declare the item and value.

Because its above 500, the SG custom hold it until my friend pay for the tax.

So you might experience the same thing e.g. pay the "tax" when the item arrived in UK.

Thanks, so when you say "tax" do you mean VAT? If so thats an additional 20% in the UK which would make it a lot more expensive

Sorry if this all sounds really simple, but I have never purchased from overseas before.

Cheers

Yes, you would have to pay VAT at the usual rate, as well as customs duty. See here.

  • Often the couriers pay the taxes "on your behalf", add their own exorbitant fees on top and hold your package hostage until you pay up.
  • Any WLAN or cellular radios in the device might not operate in the frequencies you might want.
  • The manufacturer's warranty might not be valid outside the exporting country.

In general the savings are not worth the risk and hassle IMHO. Buying from another EU country however is much easier and safer.
