Does anyone know if this works with more than 4 homescreens? I believe that this requries installing the modified-hildon-desktop package, but I am concerned that this will conflict with the portrait desktop setup.

Newer builds of the portrait hildon-desktop requires a new hildon-home with support for separate wallpapers. I'll release it after some testing .

hildon crashes??
i never have those kind of problem but to solve RAM hogging you dont you use optimize N900 that refresh your phone without having to reboot it....
