I think the way forward with this is if a experinced user find a decent app that they find usefull is to post like a mini review for us noobs just detailing what its for. i know us noobs ask alot lol however we all start somewhere.

I look for a vesion of the Debian "Planner" application.
This is a complete replacement of MS Project without limitations to number of activities but less reporting "out ofthe box".
So, it is more userfriendly than Primvera.
Has anyone managed to install this?

    I noticed to..
I would like to see more apps written in Python. It is more configurable and with little effort you could expand-it on device

So, I've been restoring and updating my N900 after a reflash, and looking at what's changed in the way of software since I last paid attention to applications.

Leaving aside all the usual/obvious stuff, the interesting "new" (to me) discoveries include:

    1) CloudGPS - still in devel, but this is one very sweet GPS/mapping application. Truly pleasant to use.

    2) Opera Mobile - though this isn't new, it was a pain in the neck a year ago. Combined with browser-switchboard, it's fast, usable and has replaced Microb nicely.

    3) cl-launcher - use the camera lens cover to launch a menu, to which you can add apps such as Flashlight, mBarcode and Frontview (all of which are well worth a look).

For me there are three applications that are very important nowadays:
    1) Darhon Finance:
    http://www.darhon.com/product/darhon-finance
for keeping all my finance stuff. It replaces the Pocket
Money program of my Palm Tungsten.

    2) Firefox on Maemo5 which is fennec, currently 7.0.1 here :

    3) leafpad: http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/leafpad/

in any case, get debian on your device
it expands the application library and possibilties of using the n900.
    also get:
    psx4m-gui (pcsx-rearmed)
    leafpad
    qtmobilehotspot
    syobon action
    slysics
    conky and it's layoutswitcher
    opera mobile
    faster app manager
    mplyer
    cutetube-qml

that is mostly everything i need everyday to get happy with my N900
