Searching is allowed You can can modify the key bar with gconftool.

Example:
Code:
gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/xterm/key_labels -t list --list-type=string "[Esc,<,>,|,^,%,~]"
 gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/xterm/keys -t list --list-type=string "[Escape,less,greater,bar,asciicircum,percent,asciit ild

Also, if you just hit the blue key and the Sym key all those other keys pop up. It's really not much trouble. ^~ρΏ

I just remap my keyboard. Bar ( | ) is on Shift+Space for me. But to each their own.

I've added to my X-Term bar the only buttons that the vkb cannot properly provide for X-Term - arrow keys and a backspace. So if I'm feeling like using X-Term in portrait mode it's usable - still not convenient per se, but usable.
