N900 PR1.2 brand new weird restart problem

    Hello,

I had N900 for over a year, but it was stolen 3 days ago.

So I went ahead and got another brand new N900.

This one keeps restarting all of a sudden. It must have done at least 5 sudden restarts out of the blue within less than 3 hours.

No software has been installed yet what so ever. It is still on PR 1.2. I only imported my contacts from SIM (also a brand new SIM).

I checked other threads for clues, but found nothing comparable to my case.

First 2 restarts happened at prompting for 3G settings for my provider, once at the prompt, and once after pressing SAVE.

Then several restarts also followed at random times.

From this thread: N900 Restart I learned to perform the following commands, though I don't know what the results mean (I'm not exactly an advanced user, or even an average user when it comes to N900 and its community)

    ~ $ cat /proc/bootreason
    32wd to
    ~ $ cat /var/lib/dsme/stats/lifeguard_resets
cat: can't open '/var/lib/dsme/stats/lifeguard_resets': no such file or directory
    ~ $ cat /var/lib/dsme/stats/lifeguard_restarts
    /usr/bin/ohm-session-agent: 2

Note: before I could copy all of these commands, my N900 restarted again. When I repeated the commands, the results didn't change, if that means anything.

Finally I tried to restore default settings. Once I got the first screen after the reset (the one with regional settings), it restarted on its own.

To be totally honest, when I got it, I noticed that there was one conversation with a number dated about 10 months ago. It looks like the device was tried briefly and returned. could it be the battery is malfunctioning? Could it be the battery's pins (or the device's) aren't making proper contact? Could it be refurbished (how would I know)?

Please advise. Is there anything I can do? Could a flash to PR 1.3 resolve such issue?

This is the last new N900 in my town. Is it possible to fix it? or should I surrender my case and get a Galaxy SII (I hate andoroid by the way, even after trying it on SII) instead?

    Thank you for your reply.

Since N900 isn't available directly from Nokia dealers anymore, I had to purchase it from a regular shop. And even though the device has a Nokia Care warranty, from past experiences they will suggest replacing the device, which is not available as I mentioned. I am trying to solve the problem in a way that won't make the seller mind returning the device for an exchange later on. I am afraid changing the SW could do that and I could get stuck with a broken device

Edit: I just contacted the seller by phone. He said it's OK to try the latest SW. He would still allow me to exchange it for a galaxy SII if that didn't work out. I'm hoping it'll work as I loved my previous N900. I'll try to flash to PR 1.3 and report back. Thank you.

    @ blue_led
Thank you for your reply. I checked and both are already set to zero, which I guess doesn't explain my case, and this suggests that my device has a higher chance of continuing this out of the blue restart thing, even after flashing, as I understood from what I read.

Anyway, I flashed to PR 1.3 last night. No reboots so far, but I need to test it a lot today as I fell asleep short after flashing last night.

Thank you for your support guys.

I'll update if I have further reboots.
