This is common sense so read it and understand it.

The N900's are near on all out of warranty and the only option is to repair.

There is enough information on this community now for ANY engineer to look at and do a competent repair.

Here are 2 links for the service manual download.

The last one is from a user on here who has kindly gave the download link.

Because the new one will end up with the same problem as the old one and your back to square one.

People want the N900 repaired who do not have the skills then they do not have a choice but to go to an engineer.

Very handy. That doc really needs to go in the wiki (however poor some members think the wiki is!).

Good tip about the external charger. Funny thing: very few (none) high street shops seem to sell them.
Q. Is there a way to stop the clock from resetting every time the battery is removed?

Not sure I'm clear on what people's thoughts are on these matters:
- can a device with a partly working USB port be repaired?
- how long have I got with a port that only works with the more "aggressive" pc cable, based on say plugging it in twice a day?

One point about patially working usb ports is that at least it is still intact on the pcb and not broken off alltogether.

Under these circumstances it is very easy to solder up the rear 5 pins and solder down the 2 sides to the earth plain because the port is still in place and once the jacket has been soldered down it is not going to move again.

One thing is repairing a port that has broken off, but a much easier repair can be done when it is actually still in place for 2 reasons... breakoff will break all 5 tracks on the rear and will have to be aligned first to solder back on.... if still on the board and working partially then the port is more or less in place and all that has to be done is a re-solder of the rear pins and soldering down both sides of the jacket to the earth plain which does not usually need any alignment whatsoever, so much easier to do.

The moral of this is do NOT wait untill the port has broken off and do a repair before.

To be honest, most sane approach is (if you have guaranty) getting s.h.i.t phone from Nokia care, then selling is as new in eBay/whatever. This way, You can - most of the times - buy N900 in indeal condition, and have ~50$ or more left in pocket.

Things get more complicated, if You have no guaranty.

// Edit

@ upper poster - most of the times, it *is* hard, unless You get all soldering pads on place (which most likely isn't the case - almost always at least one pad is ripped of with port). Also, have in mind, that not everyone got skills/hardware to solder things under magnifying glass. And, don't even try to do that with regular, 2-3mm soldering iron heater. You need to buy/DIY one thinner than 1 mm.
