WTF is wrong with 512MB of RAM? It has to be an EXTREMELY shabbily written OS and programs if 512MB is not even enough.

Yeah 1GB would be a nice futureproof option but 512MB would be acceptable right now.

In MeeGo-land, "apps" are forced by the compliance spec to bundle all their external (non-core) dependencies. Among all the other things that are wrong with this, it means that the benefits of shared libraries are lost and the storage and memory footprint increases accordingly. The N9 is going to need that 1G. Imagine for instance if every Fremantle python app had to include its own python runtime.
