Use an epoxy needle-type dispenser to avoid mess (I used them successfully in numerous assemblies)... also, most epoxies will outlive the device.

EDIT: my other reason for focusing on epoxy is that more owners will be able to apply that than solder.

Ok just did it to my new used N900.

This will indeed insure that it will be very hard to break off, i did the method of scraping off some of the "green stuff" and making some more copper to hold on to.

Do you think it is possible to glue some small metal plate or the like from the top of the usb micro port to the metal structure behind it?
This would give it far more strength than soldering or gluing to the pcb due to the bigger surface used.

As mentions above dr_frost_dk, have gracefully soldered my usb port, it looks as if, its gonna be able to take a beating, so no more worries about a broken phone due to disconnecting charger early in the morning, when the phone some times gets thrown around quite a bit ..

I've got my N900 for almost 2 years now and plugging in/out my USB cable around 5 times a day and never had any issues.
    Maybe I'm just lucky.

Again, odds are many connectors were properly tinned. But many weren't. In this case it makes ALL the difference.

I think it's my duty to start complaining how wonderfully reliable my usb port has been to date. I have 2101 and bought it december 09. Greek version, the one with fmtx disabled (I think it has to be some kind of hardware difference as I reflashed with the global firmware and the fmtx was still disabled).
