I got my wife an HP Veer. She gets a cute little phone, and I get another Linux handset in the house to tinker with. Win win!

apple handsets are quite girlish,here in china ,almost every 40th girl owns an apple 4g.so that might be a good choice or nokia X-7 .

iPhone is a no-go... She really wants a hardware keypad again. I will look at everyones suggestions and will see how we get on.

I do have a certain attraction to HP/Palm devices, but perhaps in this instance S40 or Symbian^3 is the way to go...

Have you thought about this?

very easy to use and lots of features, built in games etc.

given the reason for the original question, I would suggest a Motorola Defy, or a JCB phone!

If you like the build quality of Nokia, and don't mind Symbian, then C7, E6, N8 or E7 all offer different form factors and price points. N8 is the best bet for a slab. Anna update for symbian has brought some nice features, and Belle should be out later this year, and looks to be even more special.
