lately my n900 gets very warm specially around the volume control button and the corner around it and also next to the camera. the battery is also consumed rapidly. also i am not using internet on my phone still it gets warm also even when the phone is idle and the cpu usage is 0% and the ram used is around 160 mb it still gets warm.when i charge it 100% it hardly lasts 4-5 hrs max. what may be the problem.

(this is happening when i am not browsing or running any app on it the phone is totally idle only used to receive calls and dial .)

What does "top" (on the command line) show as the top three CPU using processes? Maybe you need a new battery?

Do you have 2G/3G switched on? The phone eats the battery like crazy with the radio on, even if you don't do stuff. Sometimes it decides to update (which can eat like 40MB of data per day), and Skype, Gtalk, etc. will also keep the modem busy.
