I don't think I ever had any conversation with him directly here at the forums. But as soon as I read the title of this thread and his id "lcuk", I immediately could recall his avatar pic in my mind. That just shows how much I've seen him around here over my past 2 years at TMO.
I'm upset. I don't want anyone to be leaving here like this.
I hope he's happy wherever he is. We will miss him.

36. Though - it doesn't matter how he died.
We've lost someone, a close friend and the family have lost a fiance and a father - reasons why it happened doesn't change anything about the fact. Speculation doesn't add anything useful. What-if's can't bring him back. He will live on within our memories of him and in the software, ideas and data he has contributed.
Gary... For me he was one of top stars in Maemo community (in old good times when N8x0 were top). Met him few times on different conferences, discussed on misc things...
I remember discussions about running liqbase on something other then Nokia tablets (iirc Sharp Zaurus). After few chats we made it working.
It is sad when such people die. He was full of ideas and knowledge.
One of my fondest memories of Gary (although I have plenty) was hanging out with him one night in Amsterdam. He had already been to a (ahem) "coffee shop," and I was three sheets to the wind myself... We ended up staying up until about 4:00 AM chatting about code and design and how he approached writing code much like I approached my design work.
He loved saying, "I need to go write..." which, to Gary, meant sitting down with his device and writing C -- straight out of his head, with no preparation or planning.
That night, after 4:00 AM, he ended up coding what became a multi-user sharing application in which several N900 users could collaborate by sketching notes on their device, at the same time seeing everyone's notes appear on a projection screen... He didn't quite finish the app by 9:00 AM the next morning (when a bunch of us had to meet for a Nokia brainstorming session), but he was so excited to show me what he had done since we said goodnight the previous evening/morning.
He finished the app by 4:00 PM that day... And it worked.
Gary was a good friend. I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to spend several hours on several different occasions just being friends with him... No Maemo/MeeGo, no agenda, just hanging.
The photos linked below begin in Berlin and end in Dublin. The third image is of Gary talking about the app that he had developed after he and I chatted that night.
In Amsterdam one night we all went to a club at Nokia's treat, but the music was so loud several of us went outside. It started raining lightly and I was the only one with an umbrella, so we huddled underneath, heads bumping occasionally, as Gary shared his liqbase touch-responsive particle swarming demo. We were all charged up by it and kept throwing ideas at him, until finally he couldn't take it anymore and had to run back to his hotel room to code.
This is so close to the community and being a long time member I do remember how much Gary did for the community.
In fact we all remember when he went through a tough patch without a job and all - all of which makes it so much more personal to us - who knew him and his passion.
I never met him or anything - but that fact that this forum post about a foum member could make me so affected, I am really agast t - he was so young - I mean this showas how much of a "live" community this was.

Never met Gary in person but once had a very very very small formal kind of talk in IRC. Have always followed his work and ideas in this community. He was very positive and always committed to the work. He was one of the pioneers in this community. He will be missed and his loss felt. Rest in Peace.
