Also, out of curiosity, I barely ever use functionality that required me to be root (all I've used it for so far was to put some apps in the path statement and to modify my menus)... I'm just wondering, are people enabling root because they want to or because they need to?

I dont think that you need to have access to Linux to be come " root". Download the latest Update File from NokiaEurope. Patch it with the Patch file made available by " Kreature " . Flash your Nokia 770 with this patched Nokia Update File. Install Xterm (and also Vim its useful ). Type ' sudo gainroot' at Xterm and you will change over to ' Root'.

Thank for your tip. Can I ask where find this patch, or where to find any additionally info about this patch?

I don't know if this was documented or not, but the VMWare Player does not automatically attach the Nokia device. AFTER plugging it in and turning it on, you must click the "Nokia Mobile Phone Device" that shows up in the title bar of the virtual machine... so it is "white" instead of "blue"

I just walked someone through this and it took me 20 minutes to figure out that the device was attached to the PC but not the VM

Sorry if this is off topic, but what is the quickest way to access/transfer files on my pc from VMWare/Ubuntu? It looks to me that i can only see the linux file system from ubuntu?

Is Ubuntu VMWare Player Virtual Environment necessary? I have been trying to download this from ubuntu.com for 2 days now and it downloads at about 2kb/s and then times out after about 10 hours of downloading. Are there any other virtual enviroments i can use? Is all i need a live linux cd? Or must I use ubuntu? Anyone have any links besides http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/vmware/Ubuntu-5.10.zip ? Thanks for any help.

champ, try this link:
http://mirror.cs.umn.edu/ubuntu-rele...stall-i386.iso

This is an install cd. The best way to use it is to create a new virtual machine in vmware. Give it about 2 gigs of storage and mount this ISO as the CDROM drive.

When you start the vertual machine, it will install linux and then you will be able to install and use the scratchbox and other maemo development tools.

Good Luck!

Also, as I mentioned elsewhere, a simple Linux live CD like Knoppix works just fine, without installing anything to your PC.
