Patch it with the Patch file made available by " Kreature " . Flash your Nokia 770 with this patched Nokia Update File. Install Xterm (and also Vim its useful ). Type ' sudo gainroot' at Xterm and you will change over to ' Root'.

I don't know if this was documented or not, but the VMWare Player does not automatically attach the Nokia device. AFTER plugging it in and turning it on, you must click the "Nokia Mobile Phone Device" that shows up in the title bar of the virtual machine... so it is "white" instead of "blue"
I just walked someone through this and it took me 20 minutes to figure out that the device was attached to the PC but not the VM

Also, as I mentioned elsewhere, a simple Linux live CD like Knoppix works just fine, without installing anything to your PC.
Also, out of curiosity, I barely ever use functionality that required me to be root (all I've used it for so far was to put some apps in the path statement and to modify my menus)... I'm just wondering, are people enabling root because they want to or because they need to?
