Well, iirc you only need a number to activate the account. After that you can easily disregard the phone and use Gizmo. That's the beautiful thing - GC can forward calls directly to Gizmo via SIP. Sorry, no other SIP providers supported yet.
And to get a US phone number is easy, they are practically given away these days...

edit: Got my invite! Thanks everyone. Looks like right now GrandCentral is giving out their own invites readily. Just fill out a "reserve a number" form.

This is correct.
One can get on the reserve list just by going to GC and signing up. This also helps one avoid the idea of begging, borrowing and stealing.
