So the latest version of OS2008 includes a "Get Started" gizmo on the desktop. This button actually launches a .swf file called "N800-tutorial.swf" located at "/usr/share/tutorial-applet".

Forgive me if this has been asked before... but does anyone know how this is being launched without launching the web browser as well?

This would kick some serious butt for playing flash games like Line Rider and such without having the extra overhead of the web browser running along side it.

Not sure how it launches (still trying to get the latest, download is a tad slow) but if I'm right you can go into

/usr/share/applications/hildon

and find the desktop file that is used by the "button" for the "get started" gizmo. the Exec= line should give you the command for starting this item. I would also look for an app called flashplayer. as on a full on Linux box that is the name of the stand alone player.

Looks like it's pointing to "Exec=/usr/bin/tutorial-eal-bin"

I'll try and do some investigating to see if it can launch other things, but probably not.

cat /usr/bin/tutorial-eal-bin
reveals the location of the swf
/usr/share/tutorial-applet/N800-tutorial.swf

Yea, I mentioned the location of the swf in the first posting. Any clue how to point tutorial-eal-bin to a different swf?

Well, I decompiled the Linerider.swf file and made it so that it would run at low quality instead of high and got no noticeable frame rate increase when running it in the N800 OS2008 web browser. I'm still right around 4-5fps. I then replaced the N800-tutorial.swf file with this hacked version of Linerider and once again got no noticeable increase in performance. So it seems to me that the browser itself puts no noticeable strain on the flashplayer that comes with OS2008... 400mhz just ain't that much.

The browser uses the swf plug-in, the browser source is free. This has been asked before and the answer was to look at the browser source to see how the plug-in hooks into the binary and then provide the same hooks in your standalone app.

With that said, the name of the binary suggests that there will be a tutorial about eal (which iirc is the browser abstraction layer) so you might try looking for the source and/or the tutorial itself.

Or browser (i.e. mozilla engine) is launched with the tutorial too, only the UI is different (=none). Actually if you turn off flash plugin in browser, tutorial does not run and you see just blank screen (hold escape to close active application).
