I have the N9 running on AT&T for a little over 2 weeks now and when I bought it I just took the sim from my iPhone 4S and inserted it and started using. My question is this: Is there any benefit to telling AT&T what equipment I am using? I used a samsung focus and a blackberry during my time on AT&T between phones and I always told ATT that I had new equip and they would do something on their end. Is this a necessary step? My N9 is doing fine but I was wondering if it would affect the update being pushed through my phone.

No you absolutely should not. There are many minor reasons, worst is your phone being classified as a certain type and thus you may incur charges based on data rates, etc.. You can never know what changes happen to terms of service so best be safe from these traps.

As long as you get good signal and good data, you're fine. The update is in no way connected to AT&T.

I wouldn't trust AT&T on this. If it works - just use it.
