To be honest, the N9 does just fine if you keep background connections on and stay in an area with good signal. The phone shows the connection as active, but it's not transfering data and not consuming much power.

The only time when I have experienced problems with this "always-on" connection is near a weak WLAN hotspot. In that case the phone never really enters powersaving mode but constantly tries to establish connection and drains battery.

In general. the battery life "acceptable" at best if you keep background connections on. But, if you read my detailed obervations at harmattan bugs in bug# 463 , I think you can see that there is scope for improvement. I will quote it here for your reference:

Detailed explanation:

My phone dropped below 20% battery the other night and entered power save mode,
and hence it was not connected to the wifi at home all throughout the night as
it would normally do, and I had just 1% (17% --> 16%) battery level drop
overnight.

Now yesterday it was connected all the time as it was not in powersave and it
dropped 6% (39% --> 33%)battery level.

This suggests to me that had the phone only woken up the wifi to connect for
email/Facebook sync and disconnected, it would have consumed less battery.
Hence I think there may be scope for further optimisation to the connection
framework and algorithms. (Note: I have disabled email synce after 11pm until
7.30am. only Facebook feeds were refreshing through the night)

Hint : The way I expect it to be is exactly what symbian^3 (My previous phone
N8) does, and it has stellar battery life.

PS: Also this is one scenario where I was under wifi coverage at home, hence
the 6% drop. If I had been away from home in a 3G serviced area, the battery
level drop would have been even more severe I think.
So, basically, I while its at "acceptable" level in a good network strength (both wifi and 3G) , this also means that the current scheme may misbehave a lot in bad signal scenarios and I will have to "baby" my phone i.e keep a track of power usage all times, which is certainly what I dont want to be doing with a "smartphone"

And as I always said. just look at symbian^3 ! Its got the best connection management I have seen in a phone.

There is definetely a lot to improve.

I don't think 3G itself is a problem. Weak cell tower signal might tax the battery, but in an area with strong signal, the phone does fine.

Try upping the power saving threshold from 20% to 50%. This helps a lot in certain scenarios (weak wifi or cell signal) - that way the phone will only waste half of it's precious battery capacity and then stops trying to keep the connection alive.

While the Nokia devs chew on this one, it would great if we can time the powersave mode, eg 11.30pm to 7am , when its not being used much.

Profilematic. I am looking at you
