I am 36 yo from Greece and I couldn't agree more with you. That is until recently!

I had installed instinctiv and forgotten about it since Jan 2010.

A few months ago I was in a bar discussing how cool the music playing was and how I miss so many classic rock songs and can't remember their titles or bands...
That's when I remembered I had installed instinctiv and it had a song identification feature. Turned it on and got the titles of 17 old songs I had forgotten about and loved, available for me to download

It's not an app you can't live without but its quite cool to have even if you need it once or twice

Funnily enough I came across this after just looking at something similar. Has anyone investigated echoprint/echonest. There's a python binding available and the codegen application is already in extras-devel. Not sure if its fully up and running yet but sounds like it could fit the bill if someone is willing to code a front-end.

SERIOUSLY?

This is by far the least thought out post I've read on this forum..

a) Sure most stuff in the charts is **** (As far as I'm concerned, and by the sounds of things as far as you;re concerned too) but if the poster likes the sound of something and wants to find out what it is, what does that matter? (I have in the past been surprised after finding out a track I liked was by a band which I had previously dismissed because I knew they'd done well in the charts)

b) The fact that 'most stuff is shite' is surely more of a reason to hunt down the few songs that are actually good.

c) There's plenty of good music out there beyond what gets played on the radio, and it's generally those tunes which are going to be harder to identify..

d) Erm.. You do realise that songs don't stop existing, right? Things like shazam are great for tracking down great tracks from the past that, again, probably weren't massive hits in the pop charts..

You obviously don't get on the forums much then!

To remember a song, I used to like, I just google the lyrics

To find new music, I use go online eg last.fm

echoprint/echonest looks interesting.

Yer I guess if I grow up in this generation of music, I would want to (quickly!) find good music... poor kids lol

i'm more of a lyric googler myself i have loads of half jotted down bits of lyrics in a notes file for me to hunt out...

Jazz, blues, funk, classical.. How you gonna find those without lyrics?
