You should've worked out that much by now, just by seeing the different experiences with displays.
It is good in sunlight, could save some battery and production cost..
Ok, let's call it a crappy compromise then.
My easy tired eyes tell me it is not healthy to read long time on this thing.
I've been checking them more than before the N9's purchase (unfortunately my confidence in Nokia to use top notch screen hardware was too high)
At this point you may line up 5 LG's , Samsungs or Nokia's and I can detect the pentile from further than hand held reading distance.

It does not fit my usage scenario which is maximum readability of full web pages without zoom.
If it was not for the Pentile which is not fixable feature I might just have been the N9's biggest fan.

The colour cast gone will not make this a better screen. It will only do justice to the user that paid for maximum quality the pentile amoled has to offer.

That said, I don't like to be paying guinea pig for screen technologies and will go off bug Nokia about it.

1. for example in browser, or Gtalk/Skype, where's a light or white background, this effect appears? - http://blip.tv/ossi1967/nokia-n9-display-issues-5657368

2. when you take the phone to the completely dark room, wait for some time so your eyes can adapt to the level of the light, do you see some darker/lighter spots on the screen?

It seems, that Nokia maybe changed the panel supplier/fixed the N9 screen issues on the newer batches. So once again - please can you confirm if these aforementioned issues appears on your brothers N9, or if it's just the color tint, that's different.

Any reply will be strongly appreciated! Thanks.
ok, i went to see my brother tonight and ran some test you mentioned.

1st test you mentioned, both display failed, in fact on my brother's set, the effect feels more visible than mine.

as for the 2nd test regarding the dark patches, i can't seem to detect any on both set, though i did remember seeing tiny dark patches on my set before but i can't seem to find this time.

My theory regarding the green cast would probably be sometthing like the yellow imac display case, where the “glue”did not dry properly for the first batch.

Seeing how it turned out for n9, it is no wonder that no manufacturers use amoled display these days other than Samsung and otherwise Nokia. Amoled at its infancy clearly showed lots of problem and only Samsung who actually produces(largely in the market) amoled has the capabilties to meet the technical demand fast enough for its growing demand

Thanks kai_en for checking!
Do both displays appear equally bright at the same brightness settings?

Yes, both set the lowest when doing first test. And for 2nd test, both set the lowest and highest

You seem to be acting like it's the only pentile screen in the world.
It's a commonly used AMOLED config, especially for superAMOLED based panels.
It's still used on a large no. of top-end handsets....
There's more to a display than it's color gamut at the sub-pixel layer, & it's sub-pixel density.
Not to mention the fact than not all pentiles are created equal...
But yes, for the cited usage scenario, being pentile (with it's PPI) doesn't help.

Huh? Bucket loads of OEM's use AMOLED...
There's only a handful of base manufacturers, but Samsung's certainly not the only one.

I only know the original nexus one and older htc desire uses amoled screen for higher resolution screen, other than that no other manufacturer uses amoled screen ever since, aside for nokia on their symbian phone and n9 is the first amoled Nokia which gone above nHD hence pentile display.

and of course Samsung naturally.

@jalyst, have you been able to get hold with the display expert Kontorri recommended? Would like to hear what he has to say regarding the issue, whether later units might have gone through different manufacturing process or simply uses different brand of display panel

Not yet sorry, I keep running out of time to summarize that whole thread...
Raising only the things you have here, doesn't do the full scope of issues/concerns justice.
If someone wants to summarize it in the meantime & PM me, I'll forward the info immediately!
