anyone able to get this to tether properly with the particular service and device?
I was initially successful and had it connected but the data signal bummed out after about a minute. and then, it took me forever to redo do the tethering by resetting both devices numerous times. but, somehow, it gives a 'internet connection failed' 99% of the time.

Not possible. Blackberries have an incompatible bluetooth stack from what I have read. If you need to tether your N810, you will need to get a different phone.
I've got a CDMA blackberry 8130 from Telus (Canada) that I use to tether via bluetooth all the time without any problems during or post. In fact, it was easier to setup to tether and much more reliable than my old phone, a ppc 6700.
