you can certainly do it with polycarbonate.

and/or a partially clear(like frosted) with leds inside for notification and fun

Nice idea, but many might not like to have their phones 'naked' in their hands... thus, those might not sell well... this being a business proposition, the ROI counts.... so, how many manufacturers would like to go into that kind of trouble just to sell a few handsets?

And N9 / Lumia being 'unibody' makes it all the more complex... else, clipable covers could've worked [like we had on a few erstwhile models]. Then again - isn't there a wholesome charm in our 'colored' N9s? That most in the mkt today r [drab] Steel / Grey / Blacks...

seems it would be easier and cheaper to make clear ones than colored ones, and they are already making 4 different colors. I am sure the polycarbonate comes to the manufacturer clear and then they pigment it...
