if all else fails, try enabling rd mode with maemo flasher...
but exhaust warranty options first. Better to just get given new device, if possible.

this is what happened to my device: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=65204

I have been using it (albeit with no hardware keyboard) for almost a year since crash, in rd-mode. Still no fix...

Much easier and more successful to use flasher in linux, my experience in win xp showed problems with windows activation/access of USB port, ymmv

Heat is the worse enemy. The device can survive water, but not heat. I would first cool it off in the refrigerator, maybe protected by being dropped into a plastic bag with rice. Remove the SD card.

You seem to be able to get in touch with the device, the screen is not gone. You need a fully charged battery and then if you manage to reflash, it is probably fine.

Hopefully, the device has been hot in one spot, usually caused by a short-circuit, that very often is dust. So use a vacuum cleaner - do not try to disassemble it to wipe it clean. It makes sense to visiually inspect to look for damage caused by the heat - like melted soldering tin. Check the USB port here. You have to strap up and test the components - they use thin wires to act as circuit breakers and may have saved your phone by e.g. melting the connectors to the camera.

My first N900 died the same way, was holding it in my lap as it was being charged in the car, and then it got uncomfortably hot, by then it wouldn't boot at all, it was dead. Sent it off to Nokia, got a N900 replacement, and it always had a weird issue with charging (would be fully charged, but the second you unplugged it from the charger, it would then say the battery was about to die, but then after a reboot, it'd say it was fully charged. Battery Patch fixed that issue though )

Unfortunately, from what others have said on here, Nokia stopped sending out N900s for replacements, and you'll probably get an E7 or something. Although at this point they may curse you with a Lumia!
