Not completely sure if it is related to flashing the open-mode kernel, but I was trying to set the lock-code - my N9 is flashed with open-mode kernel - and I just get an error 'wrong lock code' when trying to set a lock code (no lock code is set previously)
I started a question for this in this thread, so if anyine knows, please answer

So how do you know you're in open mode? The only thing I can tell is that the message that nokia sends originally is blocked, beyond that nothing seems out of place or new...

Edit: I didn't see any big scary warning yet and I've rebooted a couple of times.

in terminal, issue command "accli -I" without qoutes
It will spit out "Current mode: Open"

It threw out current mode: normal... so how do I flash it to open mode?

I followed the directions in jaylst's post and the second command was ran, but it opened the flasher window, then closed it automatically...

Sounds like you are not runnning from a command line window.
If you are not that sure on how to do this, I HIGHLY recommend that you DONT flash this!

I am using a command line window... the problem is it just opens the second command line window then automatically shuts it. I am willing to mess up my phone to figure this out, because I want open mode... screw aegis.

The instructions in OP are actually very precise, but I have tried to summarize it a bit here (NO guaranties, if you mess up, this wll with HIGH propability BRICK your phone)

Assuming you have download original firmware 20.2011.40-4 (using Navifirm for example) and named it firmware.bin
Assuming also you have download openmode kernel and renamed it openkernel
Assuming you have downloaded Nokia flasher v3.12.1

Put all the files in SAME directory

    1) turn off your N9
    2) unplug your N9 from the usb
    3)from command line run: flasher -F firmware.bin -f
4)plug in your phone via usb
when one command finishes {it will say 'Success'},
    5) run: flasher -F firmware.bin -k openkernel --flash-only=kernel -f -R
