What you really need are the correct repositories. Make sure your extras-devel is set up as repoSTory.maemo.org

Maybe disable everything but Chinook extras-devel, refresh and try again (you can re-enable afterwards).

ok, downloading the debs to the mmc and installing from there didn't work, but installing the whole repository worked. Must be some invisible dependency, or something. I've since disabled the repo, beta software spooks me a bit on hardware I don't have duplicates of. mplayer seems to work fine (long car trip tomorrow now looks like kids get to watch Dora on the N800). Thanks.
