yeay, it charged and the reflash worked. i thought i'd have to send this thing in. i might lay off installing transmission for a while. maybe it's superstition.

Be careful, I thought a full charge and reflash fixed it. It did until a couple of hours later.

I recently flashed 3 N800s (that had old versions of OS2007) with OS2008 retail build (latest). 1 exhibited a reluctance to power off (and then on) after installing apps the other 2 did not receive-- particularly, rdesktop, openssh and vnc. Removing the battery for several seconds then reinserting resolved the problem.

hey jaark, what did you end up having to do to fix yours? or did you get rid of it? i hope my luck is better.

I haven't. As I said, it rebooted fine four or five time and I thought it was fixed. I tried again a few hours later and it wouldn't boot again for quite a while. I'm going to yell at Nokia in the new year and, if that fails, send it back for replacement.
All I was saying is that it's quite likely that your unit isn't actually working properly either.

** Update (not so good) **

Since my successfull attempt I have been using the N800 for its full battery charge with no problems for ON/OFFs.

It turned itself off yesterday after two full days of usage while i was surfing the web.

I then plugged in the charger but... it did not show any result at all. Same as if i haven't connected it.

So i disconnected the AC adapter and removed the battery (the monkey sequence)... waited the usual 15/20 mins... then I put back the battery and powered ON the unit with the very small charge that luckily was left.

After that when the unit was on.. i plugged the AC adapter back in and this time (with the N800 on) it started recharging.

I waited an hour or so and i turned off the unit. The AC adapter this time kept charging the unit and it is still charging since last night.

It's been charging now for about 12 hours and still doing it... i am sure there must be something wrong with this battery or with the charging system inside the N800.

This last behaviour makes me thing that the OS2008 update has nothing to do with any of these strange behaviours we are experiencing.

It's def an hardware flaw. I will try to figure out now if it is related to the battery or the unit by trying to use another battery i will get from a friend (he has an E-61 which shares the same battery as the N800).

I will keep you updated.

How long did you give it to show some life ?

Not unusual on Nokia phones for nothing to happen for several minutes if the battery is drained.

After trying Sleepy's approach, and re-flashing my N800, I still have intermittent problems with the button. It doesn't happen as often, but it is frustrating when it does. <shrug>.
Other than that, it runs perfectly!

I give up. I've lost all hope about this. The monster is still there, with OS2007, OS2008, new battery, etc etc. Anyway, still love my N800 . I would like to hear from Nokia about this (at least, would like to know if there are lemons out there or simply is the normal way to power on off the unit!). I am a not supported customer due I´m abroad and mine is an "american" N800. No global support for the N800. Arrrrggggg...

Perhaps some respected party (ITT?) should whip up a simple web questionnaire where N800 (N770, N810) owners can select the suspected hardware problem(s) and OS version(s) affected and enter the identifying hardware particulars (IC #?) of their tablet?

Of course the power issues might also be down to a lemony batch of BP-5L batteries or those flimsy chargers...
