Ok, try to run that same command without -su
(It'll try to install it. Any errors should show up then.)

Never seen that particular problem before! Nevertheless, it should be possible to fix, provided the problem isn't in the repository (which is of course a possibility).

First, try refreshing the repository list in application manager. This should normally correct the problem. Alternatively, you may do an 'apt-get update' at the command line to the same effect (but try through the application manager first, I'm not certain exactly what the AP does differently from apt).
After that, do an 'apt-get clean' at the command line, to be sure the files are re-downloaded at the next step.
Then, try installing again.

If the update fixed the problem then the installation should work by either method. If it didn't, then either the repository is broken, or the downloaded files somehow get corrupted when you download. Unless the flash storage is broken (unlikely) or the filesystem runs full while you download then it must be a repository problem. But hopefully that refresh fixed it.

EDIT: A couple of minor typos.

Fixed (sort off, at least I hope)

First, the application manager did not want to refresh anything and got stuck with the python package. So I did an apt-get update which gave me a bunch of rather weird messages:

Still, I then restarted the application manager who then agreed to refresh the package list. Sure enough, he found that the python package needed updating. I pressed 'update' and all worked out very well. New updated python package is installed and everything works great (as far as I can tell).

Many thanks for your time, efforts, expertise and patience!

Should I worry about the messages during the apt-get update?

Cheers!

The error messages are only because the o-hand repository is off-line for the moment, it'll probably be OK later. No worries there. The difference between apt-get and the application manager is that apt-get simply tells you (through the messages you noticed) and gets on with it (i.e. it'll let you use the other updates just fine), while the application manager won't have any of it and sticks to the old, previous update, until you disable the "offending" repository in the application catalogue list.

(The rest of the messages - those not starting with 'Err' - are normal apt-get messages.)

No problem, just glad to be of help.

I'm adding a list of the commands I mentioned before, just so that you (and others) know what they actually do.
  • apt-get update -- this is the equivalent of an application manager -> tools -> refresh list, the difference is that apt-get update updates the list even if one or more of your repositories are unavailable. The application manager doesn't.
  • apt-get install package-name -- this command will install the named package, with all its dependencies resolved (additonal packages) if possible. It is the equivalent of both installing a package from the application manager as well as updating (upgrading) a package from the application manager
  • apt-get install package-name -su -- the same as above, but it doesn't install/upgrade anything: -s means 'show me what you would've done', and -u means 'list what to install'.
  • dpkg --purge package-name -- this command removes an installed package (application) completely, including its configuration files (there's an equivalent --remove which leaves the config files in place, in case you intend to re-install it later with your original configuration).
  • apt-get clean -- this command simply removes any downloaded .deb file. They live in /var/apt/cache/archive/, but the N800/770 is configured to normally auto-delete them after actual installation. Still, if something goes wrong there may be files left over (and it could be that installing directly with apt-get install may leave files there - I haven't checked. In any case, apt-get clean is a safe command to run.)

apt-get install python2.5-runtime -su

(the -s makes it do nothing, but it should tell you of any problems).
If it looks bad, try dpkg --purge python2.5-runtime

If you get any other kind of message (better post it here in case it isn't clear) then it could be the apt database:
Check /var/lib/dpkg/status
There is a /var/lib/dpkg/status-old as well. That's your backup. If you have becomeroot installed, or any other means of logging in as root, try the following:

cd /var/lib/dpkg
cp -p status status.bad
cp status-old status

then try refreshing your application list from the application manager. Oh, and do a 'df' first to check that your file system isn't full or nearly full (the filesystem you're looking for is the one which says just '/' in the rightmost column).

I have the same error.
I tried to do this on xterm as root:
apt-get install python2.5-runtime -su

and I get this error:
