I was wondering. Does any device that is already powered say an ipod or any mp3 player that can be used as a portable hd be used without any hack for power? In other words, just plug it in with the right type of cable and voila assuming you have tho port changed to usb host?

I am going to buy an A female A female usb adapter to try your idea.
I will do the connection as follows:
Nokia 770 - nokia 770 usb cable - A female A female usb adaptor - mp3player
Someone needs to do a little app for those of us who are not Linux experts that will switch the 770 between host/unhost mode so we can use this USB stuff.
I have an RCA Lyra 40GB MP3 player that is recognized as an external HDD. I don't know how an IPod works, but my Lyra tries to charge from the host device by default. Once put into file Xfer mode however, I believe it still tries to sap power. Is there a way to put the 770 into host mode without hooping my OS?

Nokia USB phone
Powered USB hub
Powered USB CD-ROM drive
And none of them were recognized as USB devices. Yes, I had the 770 in host mode. In most cases, it appears that while there may be an external power supply for most of the system, the USB interface chip is still powered by the USB port.
You may get lucky and find a device that works, but chances are you're still going to need a cable and/or internal power hack.
How about using the nokia charger (supplies 5.7 V) as the power source. It might be a tempting alternative. Anyway, whenevery you are near a usb keyboard, power can't be that far away. Although for using it as a card reader, 9v battery is much saner choice.
Also, a splitter could be made so that you can connect the charger to 770 at the same time as it's powering the usb.
My Nokia charger puts out 5.0V for the N770... My nokia phone charger puts out 5.7 Volts

So has anyone tested this with real hardware? I'm not sure if I am brave enough to be the first. So you have to bring +5V into the 770 USB port even if you want to use it in host mode? Make sense, they designed this thing to be super stingy on power.
