KDE updates in the works

I will be adding joystick support, module loading on boot, and include the qjoypad software.

For those who are already running KDE, I will be updating the SUP so you will not have to download all of KDE again to recieve the update, just the SUP.

I will post here once its complete and let you know you can download the new version.

Hope everyone had a very Merry Xmas!

Ok - so I finally got KDE installed and pretty much set up - I'm still tweaking a few things here & there, but it's going strong for the most part.

First off, I'll comment on installation for the N810.

I basically followed the directions found in the Wiki for partitioning and booting from MMC. The N810 changes the names of the MMCs so I had to edit the bootmenu.conf file to get it to boot properly. Once that's all done the installation of KDE was pretty straightforward with one exception - the command you gave: tar jxvf KDE358.tar.bz2 didn't work because it appears that xterm won't recognize j so just incase anyone else needs it, a work around is: bunzip2 -c path/to/file.tar.bz2 | tar -xvf - Once KDE is installed it launches very easily from the application menu.

Now on to KDE:
The gui can be challenging at first, but it's really not surprising because all of the apps were written for a much larger screen with different resolution. But with quite a bit adjusting I've got set up to quite usable.

1) I've (ok so my husband did it for me) had to make some changes to xmodmap (to set up a "Tab" and "Alt" keys) and this allows me to be able to move the windows around - which is needed to be able to tap "Apply" or "OK" etc. I've also assigned the "Home" hardware button to minimize window. This has allowed me to use Canola2 while in KDE and keep it playing in the background. 810 users will also need to activate "Sticky Keys" in Control Center -> Accessibility ->Modifier Keys; this will make Fn and shift work on the keyboard.

2) The application menu is still difficult to navigate with the stylus - I haven't figured out how to remedy this yet. I've tried different font sizes and configurations but none seem to do the trick. For now I've just linked apps that I want to use frequently to the desktop or placed them in Quick Launcher.

3) As I've already mentioned, I've got a shortcut for Canola2 and can launch it from within KDE - it takes ~5 secs to load but that's less than if I had to logout of KDE and start it up in Maemo. I've also got FBReader & Control Panel and App Manager were already there (thanks PB).

What's cool is that this can also work from within Maemo - you can run Konqueror from xTerm.

4) I really like how super customizable KDE is... There are so many applications available, I've only just begun to play with those. But so far, KOrganizer, kPDF, KAlarm, KolourPaint & Kword all work well. KWord was even to open up an Open Office (odt & swx) file perfectly. MSWord could open but it showed only text - the images were missing, still not bad though. Yay, I finally have a document viewer/editor for my 810!!


All in all this is absolutely fantastic! Now if we could only figure out how to get a battery status indicator and right click ability, I'd really like to use KDE as my main desktop environment on the 810. Anybody know how to launch the status bar battery indicator for Maemo from xterm? I've tried but can't find it I don't think this KDE has APM (acpi) installed - my husband's laptop (running KDE) uses that for power management and there's an option for it in Control Center, but I get an error message that it's not installed.

I've also looked and google for possible keyboard short cut for right click but haven't found a solution yet - at least there's pretty much always an alternate way of doing the action that right click performs.

I do have one small problem though... there was a WiFi indicator when I first installed KDE, and somehow over the course of all my alterations, I've lost it and can't figure out how to get it back - please help

Just found a problem... Whenever you install the SUP.tgz as part of the KDE install, it breaks your fonts for microb

Yesterday I noticed that my microb fonts were broken (ie: monospaced fonts everywhere = very ugly and hard to read). I read where using the wrong tar app during the cloning process can mess up the fonts & I wanted the osso wifi applet back, so I today I decided to reclone and reinstall KDE. I made sure that I was using gnutar instead of the builtin tar for each step of the process and I checked microb fonts each after each step. I can tell you that microb used the correct fonts until I installed SUP.tgz - when I opened microb the fonts were monospaced.

At least I got my connection manager back on my KDE desktop. Any ideas how to fix the microb fonts? I've been using Konqueror but I'd just like the option to have microb readable in case I want to use it too.

No replies? I'm a relative newb to Linux and this is still pretty huge to me.

I can't wait till these tablets get some more processing power so that the opensource aspect really shines and we can use most or all Linux apps and distros out there.

Actually things already work quite well and the tablet is more memory constricted right now rather than processor constrained.

Congratulations to penguinbait for the great porting work!

Obviously this port was not exactly trivial, and KDE works quite well. Unfortunately I got into the N800 game a little later than others, but I'm catching up fast as I've previously been a bit involved with other ARM projects like Open WRT and DD-WRT

What you have done, even if was just compilation, it quite groundbreaking and significant, and many people owe you a lot of thanks. Even if for nothing but a proof-of-concept. I'm certain, however, that your work can be built upon. I'll post screenshots and more info soon. Right now my scratchbox died, so I need to work on fixing that, but I'm looking forward to KOffice and helping out with KDE. I'll PM you soon!

Ok... so I've been KDE as N810 desktop environment pretty much exclusively for the past several days. I've got the majority of usability issues and limitations ironed out by making a lot of changes in the Control Center - mainly in the Accessibilities section. However, Applications Menu is still tricky.

I've even been able to get battery readings (thanks to ag2 ) by using battery-status. I've made a short-cut for the shell script and placed it on my desktop - now checking the battery status is really no more difficult than it was in Maemo (although it might be slightly less pretty).

There are a few things that could use to be fixed:

1. There appears to be an issue with jpg support. I can't use jpgs for wallpaper and Kolour Paint gives the error on unsupported format. Krita will open them though.

2) I'd love to see if it's possible to port KMyMoney, PWManager and RoadNav.

3) For some reason, mPlayer is sluggish when run from KDE - even from xterm but not when run from Maemo. Can't figure out why. Perhaps it's a memory limitation? Not a big deal- I don't really watch videos that often so I can easily just go into Maemo for those.

4) Whenever, I connect to Wifi from KDE, after my set time-out of 10 mins (which I set in Maemo), I get fully disconnected from my router. Maemo doesn't fully disconnect. This is not really a bug, IMHO - as I prefer to have wifi disconnect after a set period of time - it's really more of an observation.
