really want to get this setup have had an n810 for about 2 weeks now. I PM'd penguinbait but I have not had a response yet. I got a 4 gig sdhc card ready to begin the process. It hasn't been so clear so I wanted to ask, once you archive your current os to the sdhc drive, how does kde get installed? on top of 2008? or as a seperate boot? I keep reading posts it works like an app, but I just wanted to get a little bit more inside info before pulling the trigger. A lot of screenshots have kde apps running inside maemo.

    thx.

KDE starts like an app from the maemo app menu. Once in KDE desktop you can run maemo apps from xterm. I've got shortcuts for these with icons on my KDE desktop so that I can launch my favorite maemo apps quickly (Canola2, FBReader, SDict, etc). A few apps like Maemo Mapper don't work well this way, but most do. KDE gives me things that maemo didn't (especially decent PIMS & a doc viewer) so I'm running my 810 pretty much exclusively using KDE as my desktop environment. To go back to maemo from KDE requires you to "logout" so I've just been staying in KDE. It took a bit of tweaking to get it set up just right but it's been well worth the effort IMHO.

cool. that clears things up. Awaiting the install files before I dive in full bore. It looks impressive.

Anyone found a solution to that? That's the only thing that bugs me. Otherwise, KDE on the N800 is great, thanks penguinbait!

It's not an actual fix per se, but I a really good work around was to just find some .ttf fonts (I ended up using bitstream-vera, but any one you like will work).

Once you've got the .tff files on your card, open xterm and "sudo gainroot" -> cp path/to/file.ttf /usr/share/fonts/

Then open microB and in the URL bar type "about:config" (don't be alarmed if this takes a little while to open). Then in the 1st box - Name, type "font.default.x-western" and in the 2nd box -Value, type the name of your chosen font. Then tap 'set preferences'.

There is one catch - for the life of me I couldn't get the 'Value' field to accept a font name with spaces in it - I tried using _ and \ and / for the spaces and nothing worked. So I had to use fonts with file names that were one word, or at least hyphenated.

Sorry guys I have been busy, its hard to respond to all the KDE requests, I guess I will have to post it soon...

Anyway, the font issue is caused by a configuration problem, basically some environment settings which are applied, I need to change them to only be applied when KDE is started. So I have to update the SUP.tgz, I also want to update it to have joystick support, but thats another issue.

Anyway thanks for all the comments, Please be patient I have 10+ PM waiting for KDE right now, as with most days, so if I have not reposnded to you yet, please be patient I will send you something soon.

PCQ, I wish I had my n810 to play with, I am jealous!!!!!

I went to nokia shop in nyc. played with it for like an hour to make sure I really needed it. went to buy it and they didn't even have it in stock. Went upstairs talked to nseries guy, he had the number for RCS programmed in his n95, it's around the corner. Called up and they had 1... It's a great machine. you will love it.

I did a little tutorial for MMC flashing and KDE installation on the N810 (there are some differences from the N800) over at Brighthand. Mainly, it has links to wiki pages and various forum posts to guide you through the process.

If anyone using an N810 is interested you can find it here: http://forum.brighthand.com/showpost...01&postcount=5

I can do a write up of KDE configuration settings that I've experimentally found to improve usability if anybody is interested.
