I think you have an unhandled exception here. Because after this exception were thrown, the app wont send nor receive anything from server. Hope you can add reconnection procedure in response of this kind of problem.
while you get on the upgrading, do help check in for foreign language and icon display as well, cause my friend send in chinese word and icon and i can't see anything
I got it to work yesterday, but once i restarted my phone and launched whatsapp again, it gave me the verification page again, with my IMEI and my CC written. I edited prefs.xml and i these are the values stored

What I did was once I've successfully connected to whatsapp, I will quit out and make a backup copy of the prefs.xml file. So when I next login and get the error as you did, just restore from the good prefs.xml file, confirm internet connection is working and rerun whatsapp. Hope this helps.
On a side note, error handling in the app is quite bad and a way to manage contacts would be appreciated. I know, I know... it's still in alpha, but the original author did ask to suggest and report bugs.
