Its normal behaviour: no gps while multitasking - less battery drain, so you can keep nelisquare running all the time.
may be a small timeout needed - so if you switched for more than 1 min its turned off.
Actually it doesnt matter, gps starts almost instantly if your a-gps supl server is set to supl.google.com

Any one got an N9(50)? i'm going to setup night builds for meego as well as symbian.

In downloaded archive there are only 3 pics:

Tested both:
v0.2.6: It starts, but its quite unusable. Feed shown is incomplete, places are not shown at all etc.

v0.3.11: A lot better!!! It seems a lot more developed and polished, even though not all features seem to be implemented (such as viewing badges and mayorships). The main issues I noticed so far:
- landscape only, auto orientation and portrait do not work (0.2.6 had portrait)
- Minimize and close buttons are not needed on N9 (maybe top bar can be removed completely for N9 with "Shout", "Settings" and "Notifications" placed somewhere else, e.g. in normal menu bar instead of back button)
- Feed and Places are highlighted when in use, To-Do and Myself not

Have you checked the orientation lock at settings menu (lock to portrait)?
