    This happened to me as well. It turned out that xorg package was not installed.

    Didn't try it but did a little research.

    Seems you need following packages installed.

    * ofono
    * empathy
    * telepathy-ring
    * telepathy-mission-control

    In Theory this should do something.

    Found this somewhere in the Internet:

    Start empathy

    Edit -> Accounts
    Click on "Add..."
    From the "Protocol:" drop down, select tel
    (docs about advanced settings here)
    Click "ok"

    Chat -> New Call...
    Enter phone number
    Enjoy

    I would love to have this working as well. However, my immediate concern is to have a stable and usable internet tablet experience. My main use-cases in this scenario are:
    * wifi networking: has issues
    * web browsing: fine
    * terminal: great
    * email: still no good solution
    * RSS feeds: open
    * internet messaging: open

    The issues I have so far:
    * wifi disconnects when device goes idle, and wicd does no cope well, so a manual reconnection is required
    * I could not find a nice email app. Thunderbird and kmail-mobile are too heavy for the N900, and kmail is very desktop-oriented

    Please post your suggestions.

    Geary could be worth a look (available on the Yorpa PPA).

    https://launchpad.net/~yorba/+archive/ppa

    Yorpa are the same gadgies who wrote Shotwell so definitely worth a neb.

    @caveman

    I didn't see any Issues with NetworkManager. Is there a special reason you use wicd instead?

    I just did a quick search on it. The screenshots look nice but very desktop-oriented. Have you tried it using touch and/or keyboard only?

    I've not - my N900 is currently stock and mounted in the car as an MP3 player so I'm loathe to fiddle with it.

    I'm getting another two N900s from some pals who've moved on to Android so I'll be back in the game very soon.

    I'll spark up a VM of 12.04 @: 840x480 on my desktop and have a quick play with the interface.
