the best solution in my humble opinion is try to fix MALF state following instructions here:
http://wiki.meego.com/N950/Fixing_MALF_state

i've used it several times till step 7 where you can mount your MyDocs partition (eMMC) after which copy over all your files and now flash to your heart's content...

Nokia will erase EVERYTHING if you take it to them, you will sign a form that says you are ok with it otherwise they won't fix it.

Basically here are the steps to just reflashing the OS which is what most people do when the device messes up.

1) Download NaviFirm 1.7 and extract the contents to your Desktop.

2) Download the N9 Flashing Tool and install it.

3) Open Navifirm by launching the NaviFirmPlus.exe inside the NaviFirm folder on your desktop.

4) Look down the products column on the left, and find the Nokia N9

5) Click on 40.2012.21.3 and then scroll down that list until you find "RM-696 NDT NORTH EUROPE CYAN 16GB (059K0X6)"

6) On the right side theres two boxes, the top box is all the files, so click on "Unmark All" then check the box on the file called "DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_001-OEM1-958_ARM.bin"

7) Now press Download and wait for it to download, itll default save to the fw Folder within the NaviFirm folder on your desktop

8) Now right click on your desktop and press New -> New Text Document and call it 16GB N9 Flash

9) Now enter this into the blank text document and change the folder location to where your NaviFirm is stored.

Code:
@echo off

"C:\Program Files\Nokia\Flasher\flasher.exe" -F "F:\Desktop\NaviFirm+ 1.7\Fw\059K0X6\DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_001-OEM1-958_ARM.bin" -f -R
9)Now press Save As" and and change the "Save As type" is changed to say All Files. Then rename the file to "16GB N9 Flash.bat"

10) Now you should have a batch file on your desktop called 16GB N9 Flash, if that is right, then double click on it and it should open up a console and say "Suitable USB interface (bootloader/phonet) not found, waiting..."

11) If it says that, turn your N9 off, and then plug it into your PC via USB and the flashing shall commence, your phone will restart and you will see the initial date and time screen, then you may unplug your phone and enjoy your re-flashed phone

Any problems gimme a shout

Thanks for this really detailed instruction war god!
My problem regarding this is that I run linux, and hence can not use those fancy tools..

Thanks for everyone for pointing out that Nokia would erase my phone; I will definitely not take it to the care center before I've a backup of my stuff.

Could someone comment whether I'll void my warranty if I flash the phone myself or not?

Ps. How long do I have to type those challenging captchas before I'm recognized as a human being?

Oooo, that is a bummer, try this guide then

[HOWTO] Comprehensive Firmware Flashing Guide for N9

Follow his linux instructions

No idea what captcha's you are on about mate, I don't have to type any in to post here :s

Warranty is a weird one tbh, I flashed my N900 hundreds and hundreds of times, and Nokia repaired it whenever the USB broke :P

As long as you don't flash experimental stuff that you made yourself and brick the device you should be fine

Gonna need to be more specific.

A standard reflash doesn't delete anything other then Applications and settings.

All your files are still there.

My N9 is also a brick after a week running PR1.3.

Was running fine then next time I picked it up the screen displayed the warning triangle and "reinstall authorised operating system" message - wtf?.

Anyway, my problem is that I can't charge it to enable flashing - any ideas?

^^if you enter the flashing commands in cmd and then plug in the n9, flasher will automatically charge it till 11% before flashing...

Cheers, trying that right now.

Back soon....

EDIT > If I'd have used my brain the first time I would have taken more notice of the last line in CMD - 'Charging battery.....'

@ thedead1440

All sorted now - cheers pal

Although I'm stumped as to why it screwed up in the first place...?
