hi i really don't know anything about PDA or Internet Tablet device and i want one that i dont't need to upgrade soon.
i'm going to japan in 10 days and i want to buy a good pocket device to take notes, internet browsing, mailing, chat, edit files and also for development.
i like to develop games and app just 4 fun and i want a device that allow me that with good speed and performance


so any ideas can u help me and recommend me a good one i really confuse about this and i don't want to buy an old device or a ultra slow one BTW the max i will spend on this is $500

I would buy an n810, then you wont have tablet envy as soon...

I suggest n800 since the price is more adequate, if you won't use gps etc. AFAIK the performance of n800 and n810 is almost the same. n800 lacks real keyboard, but that's fine with me.

If you think you're going to develop (read: compile) anything you might want to look at an Asus eeePC ... or buy a laptop cheap in Akihabara once you get to Japan. The Nokia Internet Tablets (especially the N810) would be fine for actually writing a little code. We have some nice text editors with syntax hilighting for at least a couple languages, but these little things don't have the kind of CPU, memory or storage space to host a real dev environment. The Asus eeePC isn't exactly pocketable but I can't think of device that really does what you want it to. Maybe a Kojinsha laptop? a little too big to be portable. A Fujitsu Loox FMV? pretty expensive.

Also: I don't think there are that many free public wifi spots in Japan. Unless you know there is some pay wifi in the area you'll be in or you plan on getting a bluetooth phone in Japan and pairing your device to it, you might not end up with Internet access most of the time. If you want to chat or send much email plan on hanging out at internet cafes.

For tons of bonus geek points: Pick up an N800 before you leave, then pick up a (used) Zaurus C1000 when you arrive in Japan. Install Debian on the Zaurus C1000 and load some compilers on it. I'm pretty sure you can find a used Zaurus for less than $200 in Akihabara or Den Den Town

yes johnx ur right a cheap laptop or an asus eeepc will do the job better than any pocket device but i'm looking for a pocket device and about the development stuff i actualy making programs in gedit/vim in my debian lol y don't use a fancy develoment enviroment in linux only in windows i use visual stuido y really love that debbugger.
The reason that i want a pocket device is that i want to make games like DS games using stylus and that pocket device features and checking my mail in class, or taking fast notes in the collage, make video calls to home that stuff and i hate hanging around heavy stuff that's why im asking for the best internet tablet because i don't want to change it in as far 2 years and i see that u johnx knows about japan stuff i didn't know that exist japan only pcket devices like the Zaurus maby in japan r things more powerfulls than a n810? but if not i will buy a n810 i really like it

i only have 2 questions the n810 has opengl support to make games and not to camplicated 3d stuff like DS games?
and 2 it's possible to develop software that use the GPS like my own maping system or a game that use the GPS hardware??

If you're absolutely set on a Linux device with a keyboard, that fits in your pocket and has working software right now: get an N810. There's nothing else out right now that has that combination of features.
If you already use Debian, then you shouldn't have too much trouble accomplishing anything you want with it. People have gotten all sorts of other programs working on it with a little hacking. I don't think anyone has gcc (or *any* C compiler) for it yet, but there's nothing stopping you from being the first to do it.

1) The N810 does not have 3D acceleration of any type. I think it would probably be too slow for even basic 3D graphics.
2) Anyone can access the GPS device. It shouldn't be any problem to use it in a game.

well thank u i will buy a N810 but i don't like that dosen't have any 3d support damm u nokia
but i think that i will have a lot of fun making a c complier for maemo mabe i start making a c parser in c that run basic c code in real time until i figure out how a compiler work
just 4 curiosity what is the best Windows Mobile device i also wanna try that some day. DirectX mobile sounds good

You could throw XUbuntu or (heheheh) XP on an Asus EEE PC. If you want a lot of laptop functionality while you're on your trip that'd be the way to go if you can afford to carry it around. If you need small size, the N810 is your guy.
