Replaced my flex cable and no change. Presumably the backlight is part of the screen?

Replacement screens are not much more than £20 so happy to try it.

Such ones are, unfortunately, mostly Chinese origin, and their quality is lacking a lot. Reportedly, ten year old PDA's have comparable display quality.

But, they indeed work.

Bought this one. In my limited testing, it looks as good as the original but unfortunately the backlight still isn't working, which leaves me kinda screwed.

Guess I have to buy another N900. Luckily they're only £90 on eBay.

did you try to change the slider flex cable? my n900 backlight also not working. i already change the flex but the problem is still there..i guess the problem is on the board..

Yes, that was the first thing I changed. Given that I have neither a working backlight nor a microUSB charger point, I don't mind experimenting on the mainboard.
